Gotthard Pass, Switzerland

Gotthard Pass (Passo del San Gottardo in Italian) is a mountain pass located in the Swiss Alps.

At an altitude of 2,106 m (6,909 ft), it connects northern and southern Switzerland.

The route has been used since the 13th century when a wooden bridge was built over the Reuss river - which until then was a significant challenge for those attempting to cross the Alps.
